Northern Trust Open Names City of Hope as Official Charity

July 23, 2012

– Northern Trust Open tournament officials announced today that City of Hope, a leading research, treatment and education center for cancer, diabetes, HIV/AIDS and other life-threatening diseases, will be the tournament's official charity. The announcement, effective immediately, comes after an extensive, two-year search process in which 21 Los Angeles-based charities submitted proposals.

The announcement was made at Riviera Country Club, site of the Northern Trust Open, by LA sports icon and Northern Trust Open Executive Director Jerry West; Northern Trust Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Frederick H. Waddell; City of Hope President and Chief Executive Officer and Director, City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Center, Michael A. Friedman, M.D.; and John Cloer, an 11-year-old pediatric patient from City of Hope who has been cancer-free for five years.

Founded nearly 100 years ago, City of Hope shares the Northern Trust Open's tradition of giving back, strengthening individuals, families and their communities through innovative and responsive philanthropic programs. As the official charity of the Northern Trust Open, City of Hope will utilize the event as a platform to educate the nation about its work, as well as benefit from the considerable charitable dollars generated each year from tournament proceeds. In turn, City of Hope will work alongside the Northern Trust Open to generate exposure, sales, promotion and growth of the event.

The 2012 Northern Trust Open raised a record $1.7 million for deserving non-profit organizations in the Los Angeles area, bringing the total generated since the event's inception to $55.2 million. The last three Northern Trust Open events have seen considerable success from a charitable perspective, generating $1.48 million for local Los Angeles charities in 2010; $1.6 million in 2011; and $1.7 million in 2012. For more than 80 years, the Los Angeles Junior Chamber of Commerce (LAJCC) has successfully utilized the event to raise money and awareness for a variety of charities in the Los Angeles area; moving forward, the tournament will continue its strong commitment to The First Tee of Los Angeles, which is managed by the LAJCC.

One in two men and one in three women will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetimes. Designated as a comprehensive cancer center, the highest honor bestowed by the National Cancer Institute, and a founding member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, City of Hope's lifesaving research and treatment advance medicine throughout the nation. Numerous breakthrough cancer drugs are based on technology pioneered at City of Hope, and its commitment to compassionate patient care and approach to customized treatment is considered a model for supportive care in the United States.

Although City of Hope will be the primary beneficiary of the Northern Trust Open, the long-term charitable strategy of the event includes three additional avenues for local organizations to receive funding.

The LA Legends Club.

The LA Legends Club is a group of Los Angeles-area civic and corporate leaders who serve as event ambassadors, helping to educate the community about the Northern Trust Open's fundraising impact. Each year, the LA Legends Club selects nonprofits to receive funds the club raises in conjunction with the event. In 2012, five organizations received $20,000 each from the LA Legends Club: Children's Bureau; Friends of Golf; Geffen Playhouse; St. James Inn; and Westside Children's Center.

Community Charities.

Through national PGA TOUR charitable programs such as TICKETS Fore CHARITY™, the Patriots' Outpost and The First Tee, additional local community charities will continue to receive contributions. For example, part of the $1.7 million generated by the 2012 Northern Trust Open included more than $250,000 from the event's successful TICKETS Fore CHARITY™ programOperational Charities.

By assisting with the operations of the tournament, local organizations and schools will benefit from charitable contributions for facility use and staffing. Current examples include the Paul Revere Middle School and VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare Center.

"We are thrilled about this new chapter in the tournament's storied history, partnering with such a well-respected and influential organization like City of Hope," said West.

I became involved with this event in order to give back to the community of Los Angeles that has given me so much, and I'm proud of what we've been able to do the past few years. With City of Hope, and the ongoing commitment of Northern Trust, I'm confident we can set our sights even higher and bring even more assistance to our neighbors who need it most.

"Northern Trust is extremely proud to support City of Hope, an organization that plays a vital role in the lives of people facing life-threatening diseases and their families," said Waddell.

City of Hope shares Northern Trust's commitment to building a culture of caring across Los Angeles and beyond. I look forward to next year's tournament and the work our organizations will do together to help those in need.

"We are deeply honored to be selected as Northern Trust Open's official charity," said Friedman.

Their generosity and support will help us to make new medical and scientific breakthroughs as we accelerate our progress toward discoveries that create longer and healthier lives for people everywhere.
