Northern Trust has a long tradition of diversity and actively seeks to open the doors of opportunity to all people. At Northern Trust, we believe fostering a globally diverse and inclusive workforce is a fundamental strength that plays an invaluable role in our business success.

In sport, as in life, we believe diversity enhances everyone's experience - and that's why we created the Northern Trust Open Exemption: to help welcome participation by all golfers. This year, we continue the tradition by actively seeking and recognizing golfers who will help advance diversity in golf.

Mission

The Northern Trust Open Exemption is intended to identify top golfers not otherwise qualified for the tournament and award one candidate playing privileges through one of the tournament's unrestricted exemptions.

Selection Process

  • The unrestricted exemption will be extended to a top golfer who represents the advancement of diversity in golf, and who would not otherwise be eligible to compete in the event. In order to qualify for the exemption, the applicant (either professional or amateur) must have a USGA handicap of zero or better.
  • Candidates will be identified through a number of sources including the PGA TOUR, PGA of America through the PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championship, Nationwide Tour, The First Tee, World Golf Foundation, USGA and Bill Dickey Scholarship Association, with additional efforts to include potential recipients of Hispanic and Asian decent through national and international outreach efforts.
  • Each candidate must submit an online application prior to January 13, 2012.
  • The exemption recipient will be selected through the tournament office and Northern Trust.
